Tools of the Trade: Harnessing the Power of Social Media for Cancer Control
Wednesday, February 23, 2011, 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET

Seminar Summary

The rapidly evolving use of social media within the fields of public health and health communication underscores the dramatic changes in the communication landscape. The explosion of social media offers new opportunities for collaboration, data sharing, research, training, and capacity building in cancer control and prevention.

February’s Research to Reality cyber-seminar will look closely at using social media tools and platforms to move research into practice and promote evidence-based cancer prevention and control programs. Presenters and participants will engage in a discussion of how cancer control practitioners, researchers, and policy makers can best harness the technology and tools of social media to advance cancer control and prevention efforts.

This cyber-seminar will also mark the launch of the new Research to Reality site. NCI staff will highlight features of the site and invite audience members to engage with one another through this virtual Community of Practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the cyber-seminar, participants will be able to:

  • List several social media tools and platforms that can be used to help move evidence into practice for cancer control and prevention
  • Describe strategies for using social media to improve cancer prevention and control efforts
