Colorectal Cancer Screening: From Consensus to Community

Seminar Summary

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United Sates. Despite evidence supporting the value of screening, rates of screening for colorectal cancer are consistently lower than for other common cancers. In February, the National Institutes of Health convened a State-of-the-Science Conference to assess the available scientific evidence around this issue and provide recommendations.

There was broad agreement that targeted initiatives to improve screening rates and reduce disparities in under-screened communities are central to reducing colorectal cancer morbidity and mortality. Implementing these initiatives can be challenging, however. Over the past 8 years, Kentucky has realized substantial gains in colorectal cancer screening rates. The Kentucky Cancer Coalition attributes their progress to the coordinated efforts of advocates, state agencies, lawmakers, health professionals, community groups, patients and their families, and other partners.

This cyber-seminar will look at Colorectal Cancer Screening “From Consensus to Community” and explore, through an interactive presentation, current evidence-based colorectal screening practices and how those policies and programs can be implemented on the local level.

• Describe the findings and recommendations of the NIH State-of-the-Science Conference of Colorectal Cancer Screening.
• Discuss the role of state comprehensive cancer control coalitions in moving research into practice.
